Introduction: let the fun begin!

If you don’t know who the Vadney is, see my more serious blog. The short version is that the Vadney is a pseudo-professional translator who, for many years, claimed a lot of credentials he didn’t have. In August 2007, I exposed him as a fraud and a liar on the now-defunct (thanks to the Vadney’s lies) Network of Independent Linguists’ discussion forum. The Vadney was at the time engaged in a lunatic-fringe campaign to get himself elected Town Justice of New Baltimore (NY), after receiving a very encouraging 34 votes at the previous election, and a newspaper in the district picked up on the story. Ever since, the Vadney has been pursuing a hate campaign against me, a colleague, Mr Scott Horne, who also contributed to exposing the Vadney, and the journalist Scott Waldman, who wrote up the story in the Albany Times Union. (Doubtless the Vadney blames us for the fact that, despite his triumphal 34 votes in the 2005 election, he only managed 17 in 2007.) Also subject to the Vadney ire are two of his neighbours and the owner of another regional newspaper...don’t ask why: it’s a long story!

The Vadney often professes to be a devout Christian, despite his propensity to bearing false witness against his neighbour(s), defamation, fraud and perjury. So I have started this tongue-in-cheek blog for the Vadney’s spiritual guidance. Please contribute Biblical quotations that will help the Vadney find his way out of his current morass of iniquity and towards salvation!

Preferred version is King James; in any case, please quote book, chapter and verse, for ease of reference. If you want to show off by quoting the original tongues, that’s fine, but the King James translation would be appreciated in addition.

I will start with some suggestions from the main Vadney blog.

(From Proverbs 26):

11 As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.

[...]

24 He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him;

25 When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.

26 Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.

27 Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.

(Proverbs 26:9, suggested by Scott Horne):

חוח עלה ביד־שכור ומשל בפי כסילים

As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

(Matthew 6:5, also from Scott):

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

And here’s a few that were sent in anonymously....

(From Proverbs 25):

2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.

[...]

8 Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.

9 Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another:

10 Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away.

11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pitchers of silver.

[...]

14 Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.

[...]

18 A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

All additions to the list are welcomed. However, I shall have to moderate comments as the Vadney is known for making a pain of himself where he is not welcome.

More from Proverbs, Chapter 3 this time:

29 Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.

30 Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.

[...]

35 The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.

And this from Chapter 6:

2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.

And from Chapter 10:

18 He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.

[...]

23 It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.

More Proverbs:

12:13 The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble.

13:5 A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

15:2 The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.

15:14 The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.

15:28 The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.

16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

There’s no rule against other people making suggestions!

Here's one that applies to Christians in general:

God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie. (II Thessalonians ii.11)

Richard D. Benham a dit…

Or, for the scholars amongst us:

καὶ διὰ τοῦτο πέμπει αὐτοῖς ὁ θεὸς ἐνέργειαν πλάνης εἰς τὸ πιστεῦσαι αὐτοὺς τῶ ψεύδει,

although a jot may be missing....

I am a militant atheist myself, but I seem to know the Bible better than 99% of its thumpers—most of whom haven't read more than a handful of scattered verses anyway. So I don't mind presenting a few more quotations here, for the edification of the sanctimonious, albeit at the risk of ignoring the good advice to "[g]ive not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you" (Matthew vii.6).

Here goes:

Exodus xx.16:

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

(Christians claim that this is one of the Ten Commandments, but they are quite wrong: the Ten Commandments, so identified in Exodus xxxiv.28, are found in Exodus xxxiv.12–26. They include such vital moral precepts as "Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk".)

John viii.44:

He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Psalm xliii.1

O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.

Psalm cix:

2 For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue.

3 They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause.

Psalm ci:

2 I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.

3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

4 A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person.

5 Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer.

6 Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me.

7 He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.

8 I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the Lord.

Deuteronomy xix (looking it up is left as an exercise for the functionally literate) suggests that the Israelites punished false accusations by visiting upon the culprit the very penalties that he had sought to obtain for his victim, "life ... for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot". Although I have always disapproved of the talion law myself, I am beginning to see its advantages.

Well the Vadney has been making a bit noise about his frivolous case against multiple defendants (two of his neighbours, a newspaper owner and his company), in which he is demanding huge damages...so, on that principle, if he loses and the defendants go after him for malicious prosecution, he might be up for a pretty big sum. Of course, he has no substance, and so it would be a waste of time.

“Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother’s milk”...? That sounds like good advice; in fact, I would be reluctant to seethe anything in milk, really. Milk does strange things when you boil it.

That verse, incidentally, is the origin of the kosher ban on eating meat and dairy products together (and, for that matter, even washing milchig and fleischig dishes in the same dishwasher). Somehow a ban on one unlikely practice was extended into a far-reaching restriction.

Here's another quotation for you, from Job xx:

4 Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,

5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

6 Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds;

7 Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he?

Scott Horne a dit…

Deuteronomy xxxii.35 melds nicely with the royal plural:

To me belongeth vengeance and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.
